The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
